  2. I met David for the first time about five years ago when Clive and I got together. David, Pat, Moira and Gavin welcomed me warmly into their lovely family and I felt immediately at home. David was great company and I always looked forward to the "great political debate" over a fantastic Pat home cooked meal. David Cameron, Gordon Brown and Nick Clegg debates pale in comparison to ours! David had strong opinions and I had to marshall my arguments well to score points along the way. But it was fun and we really got going by the time the port was out! I was always the one to flag first leaving Clive and David locking horns over the political issue of the day - two strong beasts neither wanting to give way! Clive is certainly a chip of the old block and was clearly trained in political debate by the master! David was also funny - a great wit and hugely entertaining. Clive talks about David's "missions" and one of those was collecting Clive and I from the Swan pub after a day's walking - taking in a pint with us to mull over the day. Nothing was ever too much trouble and he always put his family first. I think Clive, Moira and Gavin were very lucky to have grown up with such a lovely and supportive Dad. I am really glad to have experienced some of this myself. I miss David but have great memories.

  3. David was not remembered solely for his doughnuts in Tom's office, I assure you. The picture Catriona paints, above, is just the same David we knew - I wonder if he ever stopped talking policy? And he'd do anything at all he could to help, while we debated.
We didn't "come up for air" in the last weeks of the election campaign, otherwise we might have had time to visit David in his last illness. I guess he would not have minded - his priorities were so firmly with the Party.
Lovely man - you can't say it enough - he'll be badly missed, but in a grateful, happy way, for a life lived well.

  4. Having, sadly, missed being at Dave's funeral I feel I need to add a couple of things to the various topics mentioned in the tributes. The first being Toc H rugby (union) teams. Dave and Derek Cowie and I played for Toc H, Didsbury in the 1960s and on one memorable occasion we played on the same team (the 3rd XV - I got promoted from the 4th (or maybe 5th XV) - at Heinz, Wigan. The ground was a newly laid pitch and it had been laid over broken bricks so we all ended up with bloody knees. We did enjoy the free Heinz meat pies afterwards though.

I would also like to mention Dave's not being able to pass a food shop without going in to buy something. When on holiday Dave would go missing and then turn up with various 'delicacies' for all - whether we wanted them or not!! Happy days.
